Why Influencer Marketing is Popular and How You Can Use it too
I was honored to be invited as a guest on Jon Umstead’s podcast Business is ART on the TrueChat Network.
If you’re tired of spending money on advertising with little to show for it, then influencer marketing is the strategy for you.
Here’s what you’ll learn

What is influencer Marketing?
Marketing is you telling other people how great you are.
Influencer marketing is other people talking about how great you are.
It’s about getting other people to discuss your brand, your products and your services.
Because as we all know, if someone recommends something to you, you’re more likely to remember it, even follow up on it, and perhaps even purchase it.
Rather than a company telling you something through a press release or advertisement, when a person recommends something, you are more likely to remember it because its another person doing the recommending.
Think of when a friend recommends a book or something, you’re more likely to remember it and take action on it.
How did it evolve to become what it is today?
It all started with bloggers. Once people began to publish what they liked and didn’t like online or about their life in general, it took off from there.
Blogs offer people a publishing platform that is cheap and easy to set up. It also offers the blogger a potential audience of thousands if not millions of people.
From there, it is mushroomed with the advent of social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest and LinkedIn.
Now everyone has a choice of platforms to use in order to publish content, reach and influence other people.
Its not just limited to blogs anymore.
Because of this, its been disruptive on the publishing and media industry.
Because newspaper and magazine circulation is shrinking. TV viewership is shrinking.
People have more content choices to choose from than ever before.
It’s like the Gutenberg press on steroids.
The result is that ordinary, regular people are becoming media brands themselves with their own followings and audience.
Why influencers are an important part of any business marketingstrategy
First, influencer marketing is cost effective because its cheaper than advertising and public relations.
As you know, if someone recommends something to you, you’re more likely to remember it, even follow up on it, and perhaps even purchase it.
Rather than a company telling you something or even an advertisement, the source is another person, a human being.
Psychologically, it makes marketing more human and that’s why it’s so effective.
Second, you can accurately reach your ideal consumers more easily. As long as you have an avatar in mind of the person you want to have a customer, you will find influencer marketing effective.
How to work with influencers
To do it correctly, you need to build relationships with influencers who reach your ideal consumer.
Those consumers you want as customers.
When you develop relationships with influencers, you can work with them over and over again.
- Have them evangelize your content
- Co-create and co-publish content together
- Review your products
- Review your services
- Cover your company at an event so you get more / better coverage
- Get market intelligence and customer feedback
- Sell your products
So as you can see, there are a lot of things you can do with influencers that aren’t possible with other strategies.
You can also do other imaginative things like invite them into an advisory board, for instance.
But some of the best is intelligence / feedback:
Getting marketing intelligence from influencers is invaluable.
They’re “out there” every day listening to consumers, your target customers.
Influencers often understand what the customer’s pain points are and if you get to know the influencers, you can gather that information from them. They’ll share it with you.
Information like this is GOLD to a marketer.
